Apple updates Safari, iOS, and OS X to address security flaw

A fault in the Certificates Trust Policy that Safari uses has been found and patched by Apple. Safari 5.0.5 for Mac (download) and Windows (download) fixes a problem wherein an attacker could use fraudulent SSL certificates to perform a "man-in-the-middle" attack on the local network to redirect connections and potentially get user credentials and other personal information. This issue has been addressed by a number of updates from Apple today for Safari, OS X Leopard, Snow Leopard, and iOS.

Apple's Safari sports 'do-not-track' in dev build

Apple is the latest in a series of Web browser makers to add a new privacy feature that keeps online advertising networks and other tracking tools from monitoring user activity.

According to The Wall Street Journal, the latest developer preview of Apple's Mac OS X 10.7, codenamed "Lion," sports a version of Safari with a do-not-track feature built in.

Android beats iPhone on browser speed--or not

A Web performance company has concluded that a high-end Android smartphone, Samsung's Nexus S, is faster at Web browsing than an iPhone 4. Apple, though, says the company's methodology has a significant problem.

Blaze Software concluded after loading 45,000 Web pages from Fortune 1000 companies over 3G and Wi-Fi that the Android phone is faster than the iPhone. The test concluded the Nexus S was 52 percent faster on average, beating out the iPhone 84 percent of the time.

Researchers competing for $15,000 awards were able to successfully attack Internet Explorer 8 on Windows 7, Safari on Mac OS X, the iPhone 4, and the BlackBerry Torch 9800 in an annual hacker contest at the CanSecWest security conference this week.

For a variety of reasons, no efforts were made to attack Chrome, Firefox, Android or Windows Phone 7, the organizer of the Pwn2Own contest told CNET today.

Safari 5.0.4 update addresses plug-in compatibility, more

Apple has released an update for Safari for both OS X and Windows operating systems that addresses a number of outstanding bugs with the Web browser. These include stability and page rendering problems with sites that load browser plug-ins, implementations of VoiceOver text-to-speech technologies, image effects, and other visual options. The update is recommended for all systems (Mac and Windows) that have Safari 5 installed, but be sure to back up your system before updating.
