Toshiba Canvio portable drive now offers 1.5TB, adds NTFS support to Macs

Toshiba announced today that its Canvio 3.0 and Canvio Basics 3.0 portable hard drives now offer up to 1.5TB of storage space, the second largest capacity on the market for portable external hard drives.

These two drives both support USB 3.0 (and are compatible with USB 2.0). The Canvio 3.0 also comes in a very sleek-looking chassis and now includes software drivers to make Macs support the NTFS file system.

NTFS is the native file system of Windows in which the Canvio drives are preformatted and generally can only be read by Macs. The … Read more

Dear Microsoft: Please don't take away my Live Mesh

Microsoft giveth, and it taketh away. At least, that's how it looks with the latest incarnation of the SkyDrive online storage service.

Unveiled this week, the preview of the new SkyDrive kicks in several improvements over its Web-based predecessor.

The old SkyDrive Web site separates documents that you upload from those synced via Live Mesh, creating a limited and clumsy workspace. The new preview edition ensures that all files are stored in one place, whether they're uploaded or synced from your PC.

You can now view and open all your SkyDrive files directly from Windows Explorer, eliminating the … Read more

Google Drive is not for everyone, so try these alternatives

Google is finally launching its general-purpose cloud storage service. It's late to market, but it doesn't matter. Google's the juggernaut. It will easily steamroll the pesky small-fry, like Dropbox.

Or will it? Google has not conquered every market it's entered. See social networking, or photo sharing, or blogging. In the consumer cloud storage market, there are serious, well-established, and highly valued companies already up and running. Can Google compete? Is it right for you? Let's compare it to the existing grid of storage providers.

WD VelociRaptor high-end hard drive hits 1TB

Before solid-state drives (SSD), Western Digital's Raptor family of hard drives had always been the fastest internal drive for consumers. And spinning at 10,000 RPM, these drives are still very fast though offering less storage than other 7,200rpm hard drives.

That gap has just gotten narrower; the company announced today the latest VelociRaptor hard drive that caps at 1TB of storage space.

While 1TB seems small compared with other 3.5-inch hard drives that offer up to 4TB, the new VelociRaptor, like the previous two generations, actually comes in the 2.5-inch standard. However, it is extra thick and has an added metal frame to be as physically big as a regular 3.5-inch hard drive. … Read more

G-RAID with Thunderbolt review: Top performance for a price

When it comes to Thunderbolt storage devices, generally the more internal drives it has, the faster performance it offers. This is because the Thunderbolt standard offers 10Gbps speed, while the fastest internal drive, be it a regular hard drive or a solid-state drive, is limited by the SATA 3 standard that caps at just 6Gbps.

The more drives means the vendor can aggregate the performance of each drive into a total throughput that's faster than the top speed of each drive. For this reason, Promise's Pegasus R6, a six-bay Thunderbolt drive has always been the fastest. Now, the G-RAID with Thunderbolt drive can challenge the Pegasus.… Read more

If you've been wondering when Thunderbolt is available for Windows, the answer is now.

LaCie, one of the two storage companies that participated in the introduction of the Thunderbolt standard, told me today that it will be showing off two Thunderbolt devices, the Little Big Disk SSD and the 2big Thunderbolt, at NAB Show 2012.

While these two devices are not new, this is going to be the first time they are demoed on both platforms: Mac and Windows. Up to now, Thunderbolt has been available only to Macs, exclusively. LaCie also revealed that the support for Thunderbolt in … Read more

"Congratulations," the posting on the site reads. "Your Lucidchart account is now integrated with your Google Drive account. Any new diagrams you create from your Google Drive list will also appear here in Lucidchart."

According to Ludwig, the page was quickly taken down from Lucidchart, … Read more

Amazon unveils CloudSearch service

Developers who use Amazon's Web Services now have a new way to bring search into their applications.

Launched today in beta mode, CloudSearch offers a full-blown search service in the cloud that developers can build into their apps. Using the AWS Management Console, developers create a search domain, upload the data that they want searchable, and then CloudSearch indexes the content, according to Amazon.

Like other cloud-based services, CloudSearch is also scalable, so it can expand as the amount of data increases. Developers can also tweak key settings and parameters without having to upload the data again.
