Asus U31SD-A1 laptop review: Graphics and good battery life equal back-to-school special?

The term "thin and light" has a flexible meaning in the laptop world. Currently, to be truly thin, a PC must be in the same range as the MacBook Air. Still, plenty of thicker 13-inch laptops still exist that would have been considered thin a few years ago, but seem merely normal today. The Asus U31SD-A1 is just that sort of laptop. Its thickness is more akin to a 13-inch Apple MacBook Pro, but Asus' laptop lacks an optical drive. We reviewed a nearly identical Asus U31JG laptop a few months ago, noting that it was a solid … Read more

Samsung M930 and LG Optimus Black to arrive on Sprint?

Sprint is really stepping it up lately in the Android smartphone department with the HTC Evo 3D and the Motorola Photon 4G. Now it may have a couple more joining their ranks if this leaked Sprint road map is to be believed.

The document lists that among others, the Samsung M930 and the LG Optimus Black may be heading to the carrier soon. The M930 is an Android slider not unlike the Samsung Transform; the Optimus Black should be the CDMA version of the GSM phone with the NOVA display we saw at CES 2011. The M930 is said to … Read more

LG's smartphone plans for second half of 2011 leaked

LG's smartphone lineup for the rest of the year has found its way online, and as one might expect, there's plenty of Android on the horizon. Pocketnow has obtained the images and details for at least six devices scheduled to drop between now and December. Based on these early specifications, it's becoming increasingly obvious that LG likes to cater to new smartphone buyers. Yet, that's not to say it doesn't have any serious contenders in its lineup.

Kicking things off in the short term, the LG Gelato is expected to arrive at Sprint and possibly T-Mobile. … Read more

LG Optimus Pro, Optimus Net spread their nets like pros

Tappers and typers alike can get their fingers covered in Gingerbread thanks to two new phones from LG that feature the latest version of Android.

The Optimus Pro (pictured on the right) is the be-buttoned version, with a full QWERTY keyboard dancing along the bottom of the screen. The Optimus Net is a touch-screen-only phone with naught but the usual array of Android buttons on offer.

Nvidia GTX 580M top-end laptop graphics unveiled; already showing up in Origin and Alienware systems

Today Nvidia unveiled its latest high-end laptop GPUs, the GTX 570M and 580M. That's not a huge surprise: the new GTX cards round out the "500 series" of GT and GTX graphics that have been available throughout the year. One feature Nvidia's particularly touting is the GTX 580's Optimus automatic switching, which should offer up "5 hours of battery life in Facebook," in case you measure your juice through social networking.

Nvidia promises that the GTX 580M is the fastest laptop graphics card anywhere, ever--the benchmark comparisons were leveled against the AMD Radeon … Read more

LG releases Optimus 3D

It is shaping up to be a very good week for 3D phones. First Sprint offered its new HTC Evo 3D for review and now LG finally has released its Optimus 3D smartphone.

First announced in February at Mobile World Congress, the Optimus 3D is LG's smartphone counterpart to its Optimus Pad (aka the T-Mobile G Slate). Both Android devices shoot and play 3D video, though the Optimus 3D doesn't require glasses for you to do so. When we played with the handset in Barcelona, we found the 3D effect to be subtle but certainly unique. Images appear … Read more

LG Optimus Slider planned for September

A recently uncovered Sprint product listing indicates that an LG Optimus Slider is headed to the carrier later this fall.

Listed under the code name Gelato, there's still very little known about the device, aside from that it has a sliding QWERTY keyboard. The interesting part of this news is that LG might be adopting a strategy similar to the one employed in late 2010 with its Optimus One line.

As you may know, LG released wallet-friendly variations of the same hardware across multiple carriers in the United States. For instance, T-Mobile offers the Optimus T while Sprint offers … Read more

LG grows with the Optimus Big

Once again Asia one-ups the rest of the world's mobile industry, this time with the LG Optimus Big. The Optimus Big sports a whopping 4.3-inch display, making it the largest LG phone to date.

Its other specs are also quite impressive. It runs on a 1GHz dual-core processor (no word on if it's a Tegra 2) and is equipped with a 5-megapixel rear camera, Bluetooth 3.0, Wi-Fi, 16GB of internal memory, and an HDMI port. The display has the same technology we saw on the Optimus Black--the Nova display has apparently 700 nits of brightness, … Read more

LG Optimus Big leaked image reveals 4.3-inch Nova touch screen

An image of the LG Optimus Big has leaked, along with some specs. As befits its charmingly blunt name, this smartphone is a whopper, sporting a 4.3-inch touch screen. That's it above, making the 3.5-inch display on the old iPhone 3GS feel all inadequate.

The Optimus Big Boy will also have a 1GHz single-core processor, Korean site XportsNews reports, rather than the dual-core processor that's now cropping up in handsets such as the Optimus 2X and Motorola Atrix.

Other specs are thin on the ground, but we'll chop our ears off and saute them with a little onion and garlic if the Optimus Big doesn't end up running Android.

Rumor: Google to launch Nexus tablet this year?

Google and LG are reportedly working on a Nexus tablet that could reach consumers later this year.

According to information picked up by Russian blog site Mobile-Review (Google English Translation), Google is looking to create an Android Nexus tablet following in the footsetps of its Nexus One and Nexus S smartphones. Though LG is said to be handling the actual manufacturing, the tablet would be free of any additional software often thrown in by third-party hardware makers, thus creating a pure Android device.

The new tablet would most likely run a clean version of Android 3.0 Honeycomb and could hit the market by mid-summer or early fall, added Mobile-Review.

But before consumers get too excited, the news is still decidedly in the rumor stage. Boy Genius Report pointed out that the new device could just be an engineering prototype that Google wants to use internally for tablet development.… Read more
