Adobe Systems has published a glimpse of the forthcoming Photoshop CS6, an update that brings the dark workspace and raw-image editing tools from the new beta of its sister program, Lightroom 4.

Adobe Systems has responded to complaints about its Creative Suite upgrade prices with a new option for customers who bought earlier versions of the software.

The company, which plans to release its CS6 software bundles in the first half of 2012, had offered upgrades only to those who'd bought CS5 or CS5.5. That raised a ruckus, especially after Scott Kelby, president of the National Association of Photoshop Professionals, griped about the upgrade pricing in an open letter.

A Microsoft Windows update today fixes a weakness in the protocols used to secure e-commerce sites, which was first exposed by researchers using a tool they dubbed "BEAST."

Microsoft planned to release the BEAST (Browser Exploit Against SSL/TLS)-related patch last month, but had to pull it because it created compatibility issues with SAP software. Researchers had demonstrated the vulnerability using BEAST in September, prompting fears that attackers would use the tool to snoop on protected Internet sessions in what is called a "man-in-the-middle" attack. In early December, Adobe issued a security bulletin regarding new zero-day PDF-based attacks that took advantage of flaws in its Reader and Acrobat programs, allowing a hacker to crash the program and take control of the system.

The flaw was initially found to be in Reader and Acrobat versions 9.4.6 and X (10.1.1) on all supported platforms, with a similar flaw later being found in Adobe's Flash Player, though in its security bulletin Adobe claims this is not the same issue as those in Reader and Acrobat.

No longer is video such a second-class citizen with Adobe Systems' release of the first beta version of Photoshop Lightroom 4.

Today's Lightroom 3 understands videos in the same way a typical baseball fan understands cricket: poorly. Lightroom 4 advances several steps with video, but stops well short of taking over as a full-fledged video editor.

Adobe managed to exceed both Wall Street and even its own expectations to close out the year with high fourth quarter earnings and revenue growth for 2011 overall.

Adobe reported fourth quarter net income of $173.7 million with earnings of 35 cents a share (statement). Non-GAAP earnings were 67 cents a share on a revenue of $1.152 billion, up 14 percent in year-over-year revenue growth. Wall Street was expecting earnings of 60 cents a share on revenue of $1.086 billion.
