IBM wants my phone data. I'll happily give it more

Over the weekend news broke that IBM Research has been working with personal mobile phone records to map social networks. Some may complain that Big Brother is watching, but the real question is why some company hasn't formed already to blend mobile data with IM and e-mail traffic to map and profit from the social graph.

Think about it. My in-box already knows where I'm traveling, what I buy, etc. because my receipts go there. If someone were to merge this data with my phone records (easily had for the price of my AT&T login credentials), … Read more

Add BCC or CC to your Microsoft Outlook e-mails

If you're tired of hunting through your Contacts for addresses of people you want to include as CCs or BCCs to e-mails, this little Microsoft Outlook add-on automates the process and reduces your frustration.

Auto BCC/CC for Microsoft Outlook melds seamlessly with Outlook, adding only a small button to the e-mail client's toolbar. Its presence doesn't create a hurdle for the app's performance or the normal flow of its processes. Instead, in our tests, it complements Outlook's functionality, performing well as we used the add-on to supplement delivery of our messages with automatically added … Read more

Cursor control

Cursor Lock allows users to confine the cursor to one particular window or area of their screen, a useful feature in multimonitor settings or when playing certain games. Although the setup was not as intuitive as we would have liked, the program does work well once it's configured.

The interface is well organized and even offers mouse-over descriptions of each option, yet we had a difficult time getting started. Each individual field made sense unto itself, but it wasn't obvious what steps we should take to configure Cursor Lock the way we wanted it. The Help file, buried … Read more

Get Comcast services on your iPhone

The Comcast Mobile App offers a lot of what users have been clamoring for from the popular cable service, but falls just short of being great. You'll now be able to access Comcast e-mails and digital voice mails right from your iPhone, using a touch interface much like Apple's e-mail and voice mail experience, but in a unified in-box for both. An intuitive, tabbed interface lets you quickly switch between new e-mail and voice messages. A separate Digital Voice section offers more options, listing missed calls, outgoing calls, and voice mail. There is also an included address book … Read more

Get your contacts in order

Contactizer Pro is designed to help you organize and share all your personal and business contacts and information. This sort of CRM/PIM business software has always lagged behind its PC counterparts, but Contactizer Pro is one of the better choices available for the Mac, with a fairly beefy feature set and a clean, relatively intuitive interface. This app helps you track projects, tasks, and communication (including calls, chats, documents, and faxes, with alarms and follow-ups to invitations), and it also does a good job of integrating with Apple's core apps. During installation, Contactizer Pro syncs up with your … Read more

Apple cops to OS 3.0 Wi-Fi, Bluetooth problems

A rash of Wi-Fi connectivity and signal strength complaints have cropped up after Apple's iPhone OS 3.0 software update. Some users complain that their iPhones and iPod Touches drop from Wi-Fi unexpectedly; others that they can't connect to the Internet at all. Some users have been able to resolve connectivity problems by resetting their network connections (via Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings), but this simple fix hasn't worked for everyone. In some cases, not even a total system restore fixes the problem.

Apple has finally acknowledged the problem in a technical service … Read more

Personal organizer

RGS-CardMaster provides users with an opportunity to organize their names and addresses. With a simple operating format, this program provides a decent alternative to more popular organizational software.

This program is laid out in a way that should feel natural to anyone who has used software like Microsoft Outlook. Many blank fields can be intuitively filled to catalog all your contacts. Users are also given buttons for searching contacts and a number of secondary functions. The program felt natural after a few tries and a trip to the Help file. Managing our address book was a mixed experience. While contacts … Read more

Family scheduler

Family Runner offers all the amenities of a traditional calendar, but it's tailored specifically to help parents and kids stay on track.

This program will look familiar to anyone with experience in calendaring systems like Microsoft's Outlook, although the overall look here is less professional in design. A large month-view calendar dominates the left side of the screen, and a list of that day's events are shown chronologically on the right side. Below are important phone numbers and contacts, and the top of the screen showcases all the command icons for entering new data. While Family Runner'… Read more

Futz.me puts to-do's in your browser address bar

Futz is a simple reminder and bookmarking service that lets you send sites, images, and notes to your e-mail or mobile phone via your browser's address bar. Registered users simply drop futz.me/USERNAME in front of any URL, image, or text and it gets sent as an e-mail, an SMS message, or both.

Users get granular control over the handling of text and links versus images, so you can keep images from being sent to your mobile phone (something that requires your phone to support MMS). Along with grabbing images that are already on the Web, the service … Read more

Information-capturing software

If you've ever spotted a piece of crucial information while surfing the Internet or reading an e-mail, you might have stumbled trying to find a way to copy it and keep it organized. Anagram claims to be the perfect software for this situation.

The program has a unique interface that takes a trip to the Help menu to understand. However, after some research and experimentation, users should be familiar with Anagram. To activate it, simply highlight some text from an e-mail or Web site and hit CTRL+C twice. This will bring up Microsoft Outlook and Anagram's small … Read more
