Less than 10 months after the Twitter-owned social video app made its debut in January 2013 (it showed up on Android in June), Vine officially comes to Windows Phone. The app showed up in the app store on Tuesday, following announcements on Vine's blog and the Windows Phone blog.
Cellular provider Republic Wireless, best known for offering $19-per-month service with low-end Android handsets, recently announced plans to carry the Motorola Moto X, a decidedly high-end handset (and a widely loved one at that). Although the $19 plan is no more, you can operate the Moto for as little as $5 per month, or as much as $40. Additional options fall in between.
Too good to be true? Or bargain of the century? Over the weekend I was able to put the Moto X through some preliminary paces. Though I did encounter a few bumps along the way, I was … Read more
Sure the Moto X isn't the most powerful Android handset money can buy. Neither is it a big-screen mobile monster like the Samsung Galaxy Note 3. Nor is the Moto X equipped with a ridiculously high-capacity battery … Read more
Windows Phone 7 users beware: soon enough, you won't have access to some video content.
Microsoft issued an e-mail to Windows Phone 7 and Zune users over the weekend, saying that Xbox Video content they currently own will no longer be accessible on their devices starting in late February. The video content will, however, be accessible on Windows Phone 8 handsets.
In the e-mail, which was published on Monday by Pocket-lint, Microsoft said the move "will allow us to more quickly and efficiently add the highest quality video content to the Xbox Video service." The end to … Read more
Without rumors, what would Apple be? Just another company trying to sell you a nice phone.
So Sunday it was heartening to imagine that, in 2014, Cupertino might be releasing two new phones.
Each would be larger than the current iPhone 5. And each would have a curved glass screen.
Bloomberg, citing someone with knowledge of the development process, says that the new iPhones would have screens of 4.7 inches and 5.5 inches.
This is almost as large as the Samsung Galaxy Note's 5.7 inches.
If this isn't exciting enough, these new Apple phones -- … Read more
iPhone Mounter for Mac is a tool to help you move files between your iOS device and your Mac without having to use iTunes. Since the iOS platform only natively interacts with Mac through iTunes, there are quite a few limitations, including how to move files like music, movies, and books between the devices. This app allows you to do it, manually, as you would with an external hard drive and it both speeds up transfers and eases backups.
When you open the app for the first time, you'll see a familiar interface, modeled after iTunes, showing you the … Read more
As DIY security becomes more and more popular, we're seeing more and more options arrive on the market. The latest offerings come from Oplink Security: the $199.99 sensor-driven AlarmShield package, and the $349.99 TripleShield package, which adds a pair of wireless cameras for the surveillance-minded homeowner. With similar motion detectors, panic sirens, and contact sensors for doors and windows -- not to mention equivalent price levels for both the basic package and the camera-ready package -- Oplink seems ready to compete directly with iSmartAlarm.
The big difference between the two systems is that, unlike iSmartAlarm, Oplink charges … Read more
I can't say enough good things about TT Games' Lego series, which have brought everything from Batman to Harry Potter to "Star Wars" to life in glorious brick form.
And last year's Lego Lord of the Rings was among the best yet, an epic and thoroughly entertaining game version of the entire three-movie series. Of course, you needed a PC or game console to play it.
US Cellular subscribers can now purchase the new iPhones.

Subscribers who pick up the 5S or 5C can select one of the carrier's new Shared Data plans, which provide unlimited voice minutes and texting and allow customers to share data among as many as 10 different devices.
With the launch of … Read more
The new iPhones have apparently convinced only a small percentage of iPhone 5 owners to upgrade.
Polling 400 US phone customers that activated an iPhone between September 20 and October 20, research firm CIRP found that only 6 percent of iPhone 5 owners jumped to an 5S or 5C. In contrast, 12 percent of iPhone 4S owners had upgraded to the iPhone 5 over the same period last year.
Further, among the two-thirds of those polled who upgraded from any iPhone to the 5S or 5C in September and October, fewer jumped ship from the iPhone 5 relative to the … Read more
