U.S. Cellular nabs Android-powered Huawei Ascend II

U.S. Cellular is stuffing its pockets with more Gingerbread.

Next week it starts stocking the Huawei Ascend II, an Android 2.3 smartphone that first debuted for Cricket. The rather modest touch-screen phone has a 3.5-inch display, a 5GB camera, and Swype preloaded on the virtual keyboard.

The carrier will offer it for free--after a $100 mail-in rebate--on its Web site next week. Alternatively, you can swoop by a store beginning in early January to pick it up in the flesh.… Read more

Samsung announces Ice Cream Sandwich plans for Galaxy line

Now that it's launched Ice Cream Sandwich on its Galaxy Nexus, Samsung today became the latest hardware maker to outline Android 4.0 updates for its remaining smartphones and tablets.

A posting on the company's blog tells us that most, if not all, of its Galaxy device lineup from 2011 will see Ice Cream Sandwich. So if you're keeping track, that will include the Galaxy S II, the Galaxy Note, and a number of Galaxy Tab models.

The Galaxy S II smarpthones and Galaxy Note should be at the head of the line for the first quarter … Read more

T-Mobile offers monthly payment option on devices

T-Mobile USA is temporarily allowing consumers to pay for its mobile products in monthly installments rather than in one big payment.

Billed as the "4G Super Sale," T-Mobile is offering this option as a promotion this weekend. All of its smartphones, including flagship products such as the Samsung Galaxy S II and the HTC Amaze 4G, as well as its Sonic 4G Mobile hot spot and the T-Mobile G-Slate tablet, will be part of this deal.

There are some strings attached. The deal does require an upfront payment, but customers can get their money back through a mail-in … Read more

iPhone 4S tops carrier sales, but look out for Samsung

The iPhone 4S was the top selling smartphone at all three of its U.S. carriers last month, but Samsung kept nipping at Apple's heels, according to investment firm Canaccord Genuity.

All three models of the iPhones 4S (16GB, 32GB, and 64GB) grabbed strong sales and a higher market share in the U.S. last month, with a little help from Black Friday and Cyber Monday. But so did Samsung's Galaxy S II.

Samsung's latest smartphone was the top seller at T-Mobile and the second best-selling smartphone at both AT&T and Sprint. The Galaxy S … Read more

Infinity Blade II: The best thing to happen to iPad/iPhone games?

Does adding a "2" to one of the most popular titles in the App Store make it better? Much like the iPad 2 itself, Infinity Blade II is a refinement and an improvement on its predecessor. As a result, it's better. Does that make Infinity Blade II a must-have game? Most definitely, especially for its $6.99 price. Is it revolutionary? Well, not exactly.

Epic and Chair Entertainment's follow-up to last year's Infinity Blade has garnered as much front-row attention as the original, largely due to its prominent mention during Apple's recent keynotes. Those hoping for a true console-style RPG were let down by the simple, linear-path-based story and Punch-Out-esque gameplay, but most people quickly got over that when they found out how addictive the hack-and-slash/leveling experience was. A sword-and-sorcery version of Fruit Ninja, in a way, but that's hardly a bad thing.… Read more

Pro-grade racing simulator has a pro-grade price

I've personally driven an F1 simulator, but I doubt it even comes close to the CXC Motion Pro II. For starters, it features an elaborate motion and force feedback system, as well as an authentic racing seat for realism. This is further complemented by a powerful audio-visual setup that consists of up to three 46-inch screens and a 5.1-channel surround sound system.

That said, the Motion Pro II is extremely pricey. A basic configuration, bundled with a single screen and eight pieces of software such as iRacing and GTR2, is priced at $25,995. The cost can easily add up to more than $40,000 if you upgrade to a panoramic three-screen display with other optional accessories ranging from a brake feedback system to a carbon fiber body kit. … Read more

Apple cult mocked by Samsung in Galaxy S II ad

"I could never get a Samsung," says a self-consciously cool-looking, whiny dude, seated on the sidewalk. "I'm creative."

"You're a barista," says the man standing next to him in line.

This is perhaps the most touching line in what is a very creditable attempt at mocking the Church of Science-ology that is Apple.

The mockery is part of a new ad for the Samsung Galaxy S II, which is a phone of which many might not have heard.

The people standing in line in various cities--outside places that look remarkably like Apple … Read more

It will be a white Christmas for T-Mobile USA subscribers looking to buy the Samsung Galaxy S II.
