HTC M7 may debut as HTC One

The highly anticipated HTC M7 is rumored to shed its code name for the more formal, "HTC One" branding next week, according to various reports.

Details surfaced this past weekend suggesting that HTC will stick with a familiar "HTC One" naming convention for the flagship device, with the twist that the moniker stops there.

However, the "One" name, if accurate, may do little to help differentiate it from other models in HTC's One series of phones, first introduced a year ago at Mobile World Congress.

If true, would the average consumer know that … Read more

Get an HTC Droid DNA smartphone for $49.99

If there's one smartphone that looks like it could challenge the Samsung Galaxy S3's supremacy, it's the HTC Droid DNA.

CNET's Brian Bennett called it "the best phone I've seen from HTC in a long while, especially on Verizon," and a "better buy" than both the S3 and Motorola Droid Razr HD.

But the $199.99 Verizon charges for it (with a two-year contract, natch)? Ouch. Thankfully, there's a deal to be had: for a limited time, Wirefly has the HTC Droid DNA for $49.99 shipped. That's for … Read more

Judge dismisses one of nine Nokia patent gripes against HTC

An administrative law judge for the U.S. International Trade Commission has dismissed one of Nokia's nine patent infringement claims against HTC, patents blog Foss Patents reported today.

HTC argued that the patent, which deals with routing data to an app, is a standards-essential patent. ITC Administrative Law Judge Thomas B. Pender agreed, dismissing the one complaint.

Standards-essential patents are ones that companies must offer to other companies on a fair, reasonable, and nondiscriminatory (FRAND) basis. The idea is that fair licensing of intellectual property is needed for devices from different manufactures to work together properly. Most of the … Read more

Tweak these settings to boost the battery life on your Windows phone

It doesn't take much searching on Google to find out that the battery life on a couple of the top-of-the-line Windows Phones -- the Nokia Lumia 920 and the HTC Windows Phone 8X -- are less than spectacular. Forums are rampant with angry user complaints about how quickly their phones are draining, turning their phones into useless bricks by each day's end.

But WP8 isn't alone -- mediocre battery life is an issue that plagues many phones. Remember when users freaked out about the iPhone 4S' battery life? (We had a fix for that, too.)

Ultrapixels? Karaoke? Where HTC's 'M7' could go next

HTC's rumored M7 smartphone will usher in cutting-edge audio and photography features, if recent clues are an accurate indicator. A close look at an official HTC infographic teases a "new sound and camera experience" and provides hints of what to expect.

While the last line of the infographic might be the most fun to read, it is the lead-up that tells us where HTC is focused. HTC makes a point of saying that Apple did not change the image sensor size for the iPhone 4S in 2011.

What's more, the handset maker opines that it doesn'… Read more

HTC Thunderbolt finally gets Android 4.0 upgrade

Long-suffering HTC Thunderbolt owners will finally get Android 4.0, Verizon said today.

The wireless carrier confirmed that it would begin rolling out Android 4.0, also known as Ice Cream Sandwich, and that it would start pushing out the software in phases today.

The Thunderbolt was a highly coveted device when it came out, the first smartphone to run on Verizon's superfast 4G LTE network. But as with the early run of LTE phones, the Thunderbolt was plagued with bugs, and battery life was a serious problem.

In addition, the HTC Sense skin on top of the stock … Read more

Kim Jong-un has HTC phone, not iPhone or Galaxy?

When I hear that Kim Jong-un, North Korea's "supreme leader," has released a little movie about a missile attack on the U.S., one thought enters my head: I wonder what sort of phone he has.

There is a part of me that believes he must be sporting a flip phone, in order to show solidarity with his fellow people, most of whom couldn't afford a flipped pancake, never mind a phone.

Yet TechInAsia offered me the startling news this morning that the man who is often portrayed with a cigarette in his hand -- like … Read more

HTC promises new 'sound and camera experience'

Ahead of a press event this month, ailing smartphone maker HTC says it will be offering a "new sound and camera experience" for smartphones this year.

Yesterday on HTC's official blog, the company ran a teaser that possibly relates to the rumored M7 flagship smartphone. The infographic, titled "A Brief History of Photography," pokes fun not only at today's quick-and-easy photography culture, but also prods rivals including Apple and Nokia when it comes to their camera innovations.

The teaser seems to hint that HTC's next offering will go beyond higher-resolution image capture, and … Read more
