German court rejects Apple bid to ban Galaxy phone, tablet

Apple's attempt to keep Samsung from selling its Galaxy 10.1N tablet and Galaxy Nexus smartphone in the country was rejected today.

"Samsung has shown that it is more likely than not that the patent will be revoked because of a technology that was already on the market before the intellectual property had been filed for protection," said Munich Regional Court Judge Andreas Mueller, according to Bloomberg.

Apple originally took aim at Samsung's devices--particularly the Tab--for bearing resemblence to its own products. Apple won an early injunction against Samsung's tablet in the country, forcing it … Read more

Forwarding in Lion Mail leaving attachments behind

In Apple's Mail application you can organize incoming mail messages by setting up rules to filter and place messages in mailboxes, run scripts, or forward messages to different accounts.

A few people who have upgraded to Lion have experienced a problem in the way message forwarding is handled in Lion's version of Mail, where the message text is sent but attachments that should be forwarded along with the message are being left behind.

MacFixIt reader "Pierre G." wrote in describing the issue:

Some people have also found that despite this problem happening with rule-based forwarding as … Read more

Block senders, add notifications in Outlook, Thunderbird

A reader named Eddy contacted me the other day to ask how to block mail from specific people in Mozilla Thunderbird. Eddy also wants to be notified when mail comes from certain addresses.

While I am familiar with how to create rules in Microsoft Outlook to block senders and receive notifications when mail arrives from a particular person or address, I had never tried to do the same in Thunderbird. It turns out Thunderbird's filters make it easy to automatically block mail from a person or address, but there's no equivalent in Thunderbird to Outlook's ability to … Read more

Microsoft to pay Alcatel $70M in patent ruling

A federal jury in San Diego today ruled that Microsoft must pay $70 million in damages to telecommunications infrastructure maker Alcatel-Lucent, stemming from a patent infringement claim that dates back to 2003.

The patent, which was originally applied for by engineers at AT&T, covers a method of entering information into fields on a computer screen without using a keyboard. Lucent initially sued computer makers Gateway and Dell for infringing on the patent in 2002, with Microsoft intervening.

An earlier trial involving the same parties found Microsoft guilty of infringing on that patent in the company's Outlook e-mail … Read more

It's no surprise that with the advent of computer games, enduring classics like chess would make the leap to the virtual world. The Internet is jam-packed with different versions of chess, from the elaborate to the austere. ChessBin Free Chess falls somewhere in the middle; it's a fairly basic take on chess, but it has several useful features that make it a bit more versatile than the hands-on version.

The program's interface is plain and easy to navigate, consisting of a green and white chessboard and a handful of menus across the top. Users can play as … Read more
