Basic photo effects

Every now and then it's nice to enhance digital images with frames and other effects. Easy Photo Frame is a basic program that lets users apply frames and stamps to their digital images. Although the program works, we can't say we were particularly impressed by its layout or contents.

Easy Photo Frame's interface is plain and fairly easy to figure out, but it could be better organized. A large preview pane displays the image the user is working with and the effects that have been applied, while a smaller pane below displays available frames and stamps. There … Read more

The 404 531: Where we meet Alison Rosen's mother (podcast)

Today's show title is a little deceptive, and we should be clear that Alison Rosen's mother does not make an appearance on this episode, but Alison's all we need anyway because she's the future of television! We're excited to have her back after a long hiatus, and she updates us on everything going on in her life, including ALISON ROSEN IS YOUR NEW BEST FRIEND, a new weekly interactive show on Ustream that features guests like Michael Showalter and Andrew W.K., in addition to an upcoming segment where Alison will explore the world of online dating. Be sure to add her on Twitter to stay updated.

We're also super excited to show you guys a clip of Natali Del Conte on last night's episode of "The Daily Show"! In a segment called "Tech-Talch," Jon reports on Chatroulette, aka our new favorite Web site, and shows a clip of Natali shielding her eyes as she gives a demo and inevitably stumbles upon a a dude having too much fun. Alison has the common sense to stay off the Web site, even for professional research, so we try to offer her some suggestions on how to make ChatRoulette more fun if you're a girl.

What would you do for five bucks? Twitter posts on a new site called Fiverr attempt to answer that question, and a lot of people are offering compelling services for five bones. If you can scrounge together some cash, you can turn into a dead jedi, get your fortune read, and even get a private wake-up call! Ooooh, invasive!

Many thanks to Alison for joining us this morning; we always have a lot of fun with her, and you should too! Head over to AlisonRosen.com, read her blog, write her a poem, download her iPhone app, and look for her again soon on The 404!

RedEye turns iPhone into full-on universal remote

For $188, you can convert your iPhone 3G/3GS and iPod Touch into a universal remote control with ThinkFlood's RedEye. This nifty gizmo comprises custom software that runs on Apple gear and an infrared blaster doubling as a charging dock.

RedEye operates through Wi-Fi and offers most high-end remote functions. These include activity-based macro programming such as "watch DVD," which fires a string of commands, learning capability for added product compatibility and Web-downloadable codes that keep your RedEye applications up-to-date.

RedEye's most unique propositions, however, are its multitouch gesture and accelerometer support. Instead of just tapping … Read more

Photo-retouching software

Red Eye Pilot offers to help users eliminate the annoying photo problem of red eye. With controls slimmed down to the basics, this program is a hit, even if it is difficult to navigate at times.

The program's interface mimics full photo-editing suites, but only provides a few simple buttons and command icons. Its biggest asset is the excellent four-part tutorial. Each segment lasts less than a minute, but left us with a feeling of confidence in the program. For anyone still seeking more guidance, there is a well-planned Help file. The program offers one function that works very … Read more

The 404 272: Where Alison Rosen comments on freakishly large milk printers

She's a writer, a blogger, TV personality, and comedian. She's a Jaquelyn-of-all-trades. But her name isn't Jaquelyn--it's Alison, with a Rosen afterward. We usually don't trust Natali Del Conte's guest recommendations, but we make an exception just this once and it pays off, because Alison truly does understand our brand of "juvenile" humor. This episode is all about milk jugs, printer ink, YouTube porno, sleep boning, and much more. I think Alison just won Dirty Birdy of the Month.

The 404 and Alison Rosen were designed to be together. In a platonic … Read more

HP offers fun for the frugal photographer

Hewlett-Packard, it seems, is determined to help everyone make photos fixes right in their cameras so there's no trace of the imperfect world transferred to the computer.

On Thursday, the company announced the release of nine cameras (click here to see a full photo gallery) that at first glance are pretty run-of-the-mill. But many of them incorporate the in-camera editing features that were introduced in more expensive models.

Last year, Hewlett-Packard began including software that makes people in your pictures appear slimmer or even tanner. This summer's lineup for the R-series and M-series models, which range in price … Read more
