Samsung extends lead over Apple in Q2 phone shipments

Samsung has widened its lead over Apple in mobile phone shipments in the second quarter, said IDC.

The global mobile phone market grew only 1 percent year over year in the second quarter of 2012, IDC said Thursday. Samsung and Apple shipped almost half of the world's smartphones.

Samsung and Apple have more than doubled their combined market share over the past two years, IDC said.

"Samsung employs a 'shotgun' strategy wherein many models are created that cover a wide range of market segments. Apple, in contrast, offers a small number of high-profile models," said Kevin Restivo, … Read more

Strong iPhone sales overshadow new iPad in Apple earnings

Apple once again topped Wall Street's estimates with its second-quarter earnings, bringing in strong profits and selling more iPhones than expected.

This slightly overshadowed the first major sales numbers of the new iPad, which launched last month. Apple has sold fewer units of the device than analysts had estimated it would.

Apple reported revenue of $39.2 billion and earnings of $11.6 billion, or $12.30 per share, for the quarter ended March, 31, 2012. That was up from the $26.67 billion in revenue and $5.99 billion, or $6.40 per share, the company reported for … Read more

Q2 cubist Internet radio finally hits the States

LAS VEGAS--The United Kingdom has been in on the Q2 Wi-Fi Internet radio for years. CES 2012 marks the stateside debut for the funky music cube from Armour Home Electronics.

We first covered the device way back in 2009. Better late than never, right? The biggest selling point besides the compact size is the motion control for volume and switching stations.

The Q2 has no dials, knobs, switches, or buttons, or any other fiddly interfaces that you typically find on radios. Tilt it forward or back to raise or lower the volume. Tip it over to change the station.

There are four station presets that can be arranged via computer. It has a rechargeable battery and headphone jack. The Q2 is available in colors ranging from emo-style black to girly pink.

Since the royal wedding was such a hit in the U.S., it's no surprise the Q2's maker is now trying its luck in the former colony. The $130 Q2 should hit the spot for people who are both Anglophiles and hands-on gadget freaks.… Read more

HP's killer business PC Rolodex

Hewlett-Packard has a Rolodex of business PC customers that rivals would kill to have.

Fortunately, Tuesday's news that HP may not spin off its PC business means cooler, wiser heads are prevailing.

HP executives must know the obvious. That Dell, Lenovo, and increasingly Apple are happy to pick off its high-value Fortune 500 customers in the midst of uncertainty. Those are the customers who buy the pricier HP business PCs (EliteBooks, ProBooks etc.) and often purchase the even pricier servers that the PCs are tethered to.

And HP's fast fact page makes the nexus between business PCs and … Read more

Post-HP: Dell or Apple?

If Hewlett-Packard exits the PC business as planned, the U.S. is down to two major laptop makers, Dell and Apple. And the two couldn't be more different.

Apple: Apple is more about the iPhone and iPad these days and less about the Mac. And the core of its Mac lineup now is arguably the MacBook Air, which doesn't look or act like a traditional laptop.

The Air is getting smaller (11.6 inches), lighter (2.3 pounds)--and, matched with OS X Lion, offers an iPad-like interface. The iPad, on the other hand, will evolve into a … Read more

Intel braces for rival ARM, Windows 8

On the back of good but not great earnings Wednesday, Intel CEO Paul Otellini was queried about how Windows 8--the first mainstream operating system from Microsoft to support ARM chips--will change the competitive landscape.

During the company's earnings conference call today, questions from one analyst focused on how the chipmaker will fend off an expected crush of devices running Windows 8 on ARM processors. ARM chips power most of the world's smartphones and tablets.

Intel has consistently held an overwhelmingly dominant position in PCs, aka "client" devices, but the definition of a PC is changing quickly … Read more

I am forced to trade my Palm 755p phone as the keyboard is dying and can not be repaired. I am considering the Blackberry Style. I need a PDA but will take the extras. Will this sync to outlook like my treo? is it easy to retrieve my treo info on a blackberry? Will the battery last a day between charges? Lastly, do you think it is a good swap? I usually do 1,000 minutes a month.. so not a diehard user.--"nags," via e-mail

If you like the form factor of the BlackBerry Style with its clamshell design and physical QWERTY keyboard, then I think there's nothing wrong with you replacing the Palm with it. It won't feel exactly the same, and the operating system has a bit of a learning curve, but you should be able to use it as a PDA after a bit of playing around.… Read more
