eHarmony member passwords compromised

Dating site eHarmony confirmed today that passwords used by its members were compromised following reports of references to the site among allegedly stolen passwords that were posted to a hacker site.

"After investigating reports of compromised passwords, we have found that a small fraction of our user base has been affected. We are continuing to investigate but would like to provide the following actions we are taking to protect our members," Becky Teraoka, spokeswoman for eHarmony, wrote in a blog post. "As a precaution, we have reset affected members passwords. Those members will receive an email with … Read more

Harmony universal remotes: What's the best one for you?

Longtime CNET readers know that we've always liked Harmony remotes (even in the days before the original Canadian company, Intrigue Technologies, was purchased by Logitech). Harmony models pioneered the idea of "Web-programmable" consumer electronics: tell the software which products you own and how they're connected, and the software uploads all of the codes to the remote, preprogrammed into task-based activities such as "Watch TV," "Watch a movie," "Listen to music," and so forth.

As of now, however, the lineup of Harmony remotes is arguably as good -- and as affordable -- as it's ever been. But with eight current models (and several more older ones that are still available through various retailers), distinguishing among them can be a bit confusing. So we decided to create this cheat sheet to make choosing as easy as possible:… Read more

Oracle CFO: We didn't want this lawsuit with Google

SAN FRANCISCO -- Oracle Chief Financial Officer and President Safra Catz made an appearance on the stand at the U.S. District Court this morning, testifying for Oracle's rebuttal case in its intellectual-property trial against Google.

After Judge William Alsup asked at one point during the plaintiff's questioning why Catz was called, Oracle counsel Marc David Peters said that it was to prove that Oracle wasn't suing Google because it couldn't compete in the mobile market.

Despite an objection from Google counsel Christa Anderson, Judge Alsup overruled the motion, instructing the jury that the motives here … Read more

Get a Logitech Harmony One remote for $99.99

This is an update of a deal I posted last year.

My Logitech Harmony One remote control has outlasted two TVs and one DVR. After a good three years of use, I can say without a doubt that it's my favorite clicker ever. CNET agrees with me, calling it "arguably the best consumer remote control currently available" in its review.

Unfortunately, Logitech still sells it for $200, which is not much less than when it first debuted years ago. However, if you don't mind going the refurb route, Logitech will set you up with a Harmony One remote for $99.99 shipped. … Read more

More hardware acceleration in Chrome beta, dev gets latest JS

The newly-minted Chrome 18 beta expands the scope of hardware acceleration in the browser to older computers, but it's still not available to all. Meanwhile, Chrome 19 dev goes bleeding edge with JavaScript.

Released today, Google Chrome 18 beta for Windows, Mac, and Chrome Frame improves 2D Canvas support and introduces a software rasterizer. The new features are not yet available on Chrome 18 beta for Linux.

Basically, this means that games and animations based in the HTML5 Canvas tag ought to run faster and appear smoother. Google noted in its blog post announcing the changes that this was … Read more

The 404 988: Where do you guys know how to post videos to Facebook? (podcast)

Great news for our live listeners--the stream is back! Please bear with the short delay that allows the stream to buffer.

We'll keep working on it, and in the meantime we put together a great show for you today with fun stories about a dummy politician citing an article from The Onion, the pitfalls of online dating, prototype headphones with built-in proximity sensors, and a conceptual McDonald's ad campaign that uses seedbombs!… Read more

Get a refurbished Logitech Harmony 650 remote for $39.99

This is an update of a post from many moons ago.

Mo' gadgets often means mo' problems--or, at least, mo' remotes. That's why I continue to champion Logitech's Harmony series of universal remotes, which not only take the place of multiple clickers but also let you set up crazy-handy macro functions.

One of the better models, the 650, usually sells for around $80. But if you don't mind going the refurbished route, you can get one for half the price. While supplies last, Ice Monkey has the refurbished Logitech Harmony 650 remote for $39.99 shipped.

Five ways Logitech can improve Harmony remotes

Here at CNET, we love Logitech Harmony remotes and have recommended them for years. But--like any product--there's always room for improvement. To that end, here are five changes we'd like to see made to the Harmony line--some via software upgrades, others in forthcoming models:

1. Allow multi-remote accounts for each user. Harmony remotes are programmed via online software wizards--answer a few questions on the screen, customize your buttons, and the codes are uploaded to the remote via a USB tether. In order to use the online software, of course, you need to create an account--nothing onerous, just an … Read more

How to program a Logitech Harmony remote

Universal remotes come in all shapes and sizes, but our top pick for controlling your entire home theater with one gadget is the Logitech Harmony remote.

The Harmony remote's greatest standout feature is its easy setup process. Instead of punching in complicated codes and using the remote's on-screen display, the entire configuration process is done on a Web site.

To get started, you'll need:

A list of all your home entertainment gear by model number An internet PC with IE, FF or a Mac with Safari (not Chrome) A USB cable A Harmony remote

Hobbled program guide saps Logitech Harmony Link iPad remote accessory

We're still continuing to test the Logitech Harmony Link and will be posting a full, rated review soon. What follows are our first impressions after using the Harmony Link for a few days.

Turning your iPad or iPhone into a universal remote control isn't a new idea, but we had high hopes that Logitech could do it right, given the company's excellent line of Harmony remotes. The Logitech Harmony Link ($100) also goes one step further with its iPad app, by integrating the full listings of your local TV providers, letting you browse shows with a slick interface, rather than the clunky grid your cable company offers up. We've had the chance to play with the Harmony Link for a few days now, and although it has much of the typical Harmony functionality we love, it hasn't quite lived up to our expectations.
