I have $600 to spend on a new computer. PC or Mac?

For the past couple weeks I've been asking myself a question that I know many of you have asked as well: should I switch to Mac? Allow me to explain.

Not long ago, my beloved media-center PC croaked. Motherboard failure. Just two weeks later, my primary desktop suffered the same failure. (Coincidence? Dunno, but they were both HP systems. Just saying.)

Many of my Facebook friends have seized the opportunity to cry, "Get a Mac!" And for the first time ever, I'm starting to seriously consider it. Not because I believe Macs are trouble-free--they're not--but … Read more

Amazon tops list for customer service

Amazon scored tops in customer service out of 143 different companies, according to the Temkin Group.

Based on a survey of 6,000 different consumers in January, the 2011 Temkin Experience Ratings rated companies across a variety of industries based on recent dealings with customers. The survey looked at interactions online, in person, and over the phone, and asked consumers how their needs were met, how easy it was to do what they needed to do, and how they felt about the overall experience.

Retail chains did well in the survey, with Amazon followed by Costco, Lowe's, and Sam'… Read more

AMD Fusion laptop roundup

It's only been a couple of months since the 2011 Consumer Electronics Show, but we've already seen the new CPU platforms from AMD and Intel turn up in most of the just-released or upcoming laptops we've heard about. Much has been written about the incredible speed and battery life of Intel's Sandy Bridge chips, and they certainly are impressive, but they are thus far reserved for high-end machines.

AMD's Fusion APU (which combines a CPU and GPU), has been found in sub-$500 laptops, and makes for a marked improvement over the Intel Atom, Pentium dual-core, and various low-end AMD chips previously found in the budget category.

Oddly, you'll never see the Fusion name actually on a laptop. AMD says it's an internal-only designation, and instead puts a sticker that says "Vision" on the actual laptops, with no mention of the actual CPU model inside. So far, we've seen models with an E-350 CPU and a slower E-250 CPU (the latter of which should be avoided at all costs). … Read more

What's wrong with living room PCs?

We posted a review of Gateway's latest slim tower PC this morning, the SX2851-41. As with older models in the SX line, we like this system for its versatility. Its fast Core i3 CPU and 4GB of RAM make it a capable workaday desktop. That processing power, combined with its small size, its HDMI video output, and its 1TB hard drive, also lets this PC shine as a living room box. It doesn't have a Blu-ray drive, and with integrated graphics it's not much of a gaming PC, but it can play streamed or downloaded 1080p content without a hitch. We just wish it, and other Windows-based living room PCs, didn't look so cheap.

Almost every desktop vendor has a small, capable, affordable PC that can serve as a living room system. Gateway's SX line is arguably the strongest, as it has consistently offered the best value in speed and features from model to model.… Read more

Higher-end Gateway FX desktops get Sandy Bridge bump

LAS VEGAS--Along with its budget SX slim tower and mainstream DX midtower desktops, Gateway has also added Intel's new Sandy Bridge CPUs to its FX line of performance towers.

The new FX6850-51 gets Intel's new Core i7 2600 chip. This is the non-overclockable version of the 3.4GHz Core i7 2600K we've seen in a few boutique gaming PCs. It also comes with a midrange Nvidia GeForce GT440 graphics card, 8GB of DDR3 SDRAM, a 1TB hard drive, and a DVD burner.

As is typical with the FX line, there's a somewhat blurry distinction between it … Read more

Gateway DX desktops get Intel Core i5 2300

Gateway has been successful in bringing strong desktop systems to the budget-minded market with its DX series of multimedia PCs, and we're treated to another refresh to the whole line at CES 2011. With three additions including the DX4350-43, DX4850-27e, and DX4850-45, these PCs should hold true to their legacy as affordable, general-purpose PCs.

Under the hood, all three desktops will feature Intel's new second-generation Core i5 2300 processors, an Intel H67 Express Chipset, Wi-Fi, a Blu-ray player, and up to 3.5 terabytes of storage with the addition of Gateway's 1.5TB SATA hard drives--a big … Read more

Gateway updates SX budget slim tower desktops

Three months ago, the Gateway SX 2850-33 earned our Editors' Choice Award for versatility and speed, and Gateway is upping the ante again with the introduction of four new additions to the SX line that feature Intel's new Sandy Bridge series of desktop chips. They are the SX2803-25e, SX2851-09e, SX2851-41, and SX2851-41e.

Design-wise, the SX desktops still feature the curves we praised in the past, but Gateway has updated the top of the chassis with a padded "device deck" that should be handy for storing MP3 players, external hard drives, and various cameras. Additionally, the front lip … Read more

Review roundup: Tiny desktops with big media dreams

Larger, more expensive, and less user-friendly than dedicated streaming devices, small form factor PCs still deserve consideration for living room content delivery. The reason? Freedom.

Whether you opt for a PC that offers good looks, a Blu-ray drive, fast computing performance, or the capability to play PC games, each of the systems in our roundup will provide you with access to all of the content you can find on the Web. No streaming device can say the same.

We'll concede that bringing a PC into the living room won't appeal to everyone. For those who are willing, you'… Read more

Microsoft to plug 11 holes in Office, VPN software

Microsoft says it will release three security updates on Patch Tuesday next week, fixing 11 vulnerabilities in Microsoft Office and its Unified Access Gateway virtual private networking software.

One of the bulletins has a "critical" severity rating and the other two are rated "important," Microsoft said today in a Microsoft Security Response Center blog post.

In addition to Microsoft Forefront Unified Access Gateway, affected software includes Office XP Service Pack 3, Office 2003 Service Pack 3, Office 2007 Service Pack 2, Office for Mac 2011, and the 32-bit and 64-bit editions of Office 2010, according to … Read more

Gateway's low-priced (we think) 23-inch monitor

In my point of view, $250 is a really low price for a monitor; however, I'm constantly inundated by users asking for recommendations for monitors under $200.

Other than a few exceptions, most monitors under $200 are either not worth their price or are intended for those who don't mind a sub 21-inch screen. In my opinion, the Gateway FHD2303L's $250 price is indeed a low price for a monitor, especially a 23-inch, LED-based monitor.

That, of course, doesn't necessarily mean it's worth your hard-earned moola. To see how moola-worthy the Gateway FHD2303L is, come … Read more
