Google+ users spend increasingly less time on site

Next to Google+, Facebook is proving to be the social-networking behemoth.

Facebook users spent an average of 7.5 hours on the site during January, according to stats released today by research firm ComScore and detailed by The Wall Street Journal. These numbers dwarf all other social networking sites, most notably Google+ where users racked just 3.3 minutes for the whole month.

In fact, Google+ users are spending increasingly less time on the site as the months go by. In December users spent 4.8 minutes, down from November when users spent 5.1 minutes, according to Bloomberg.

Google dominated U.S. searches in January

Big surprise, Google continued to reign over all other U.S. search engines in January with 66.2 percent share, according to data released today by market researcher ComScore.

Not only did Google overshadow all other engines, it also managed to take some of Yahoo's traffic and grow by 0.3 percentage points.

Yahoo did not have it easy last month--users' searches decreased by 0.4 percent putting it at 14.1 percent share. It was the only search engine not to increase share or at least keep the status quo in January.

Study: iOS has twice Android's reach in Europe

A new study put out by ComScore found that there are more than double the number of iOS users in Europe compared with those on Google's Android platform.

The study, which tracked residents in the U.K., Germany, France, Spain, and Italy, pegs combined iOS users at 28.9 million, with Android coming in at 13.4 million. Combined, the two make up less than a fifth of the total number of mobile subscribers in those five regions ComScore said.

Report: E-mail declines, but e-commerce up (podcast)

ComScore's 2010 U.S. Digital Year in Review is out and shows that teens spent 59 percent less time using Web-based e-mail than they did in 2009. Usage is down for every age group except 55- to 64-year-olds, where it's up by 22 percent, and 65-plus, where it increased by 28 percent. The survey also found a healthy increase in online spending, with total U.S. e-commerce climbing by 9 percent over 2009 to $227.6 billion in 2010. And, for the first time, Cyber Monday (November 29th) sales exceeded $1 billion, according to the report.

ComScore search share now eyes 'core' search

ComScore has changed the way it measures market share in the search industry after deciding efforts to game the system had gone too far.

The new methodology was released this week to financial analysts, and Search Engine Land has a detailed Q&A with ComScore on the new methods. The company now differentiates between "explicit core search," defined as "user engagement with a search service with the intent to retrieve search results," and "core search," basically everything else.

Yahoo turns news photos into searches

Any Web publisher with a pulse knows that the best way to goose page views is to create a slideshow. Turns out it works in search as well.

Yahoo's search market share has been on a decline for several months, but the company has been promising a rebound over the last several weeks. And according to ComScore data released to financial analysts Monday, it delivered in April, gaining 0.8 percentage points of share to end the month at 17.7 percent of the market.

Most iPad buyers expect to ignore App Store

As the April 3 launch of the iPad approaches, market researcher ComScore has found that consumers expect to use Apple's tablet mainly for surfing the Web and checking e-mail--not for rushing the App Store.

According to ComScore's survey of 2,176 "Internet users regarding their awareness, attitudes and opinions of the Apple iPad," 50 percent plan to surf the Web on it. That activity was closely followed by 48 percent saying they expect to use it for e-mail.

Bing use inches up in February

Microsoft's Bing grabbed 11.5 percent of all search queries in the U.S. in February, slightly higher than its 11.3 percent share the prior month, according to the latest figures from ComScore.

Yahoo, which recently won regulatory approval over a search technology and advertising deal with Microsoft, captured 16.8 percent of all queries, a slight decline of 0.2 percent from January. But Google remains the search engine champ, winning 65.5 percent of all the searches run last month, up 0.1 percent from January.
