Getting a special delivery package from Amazon.com via unmanned drones may sound pretty cool, but at least one Washington, DC, lawmaker is concerned about the possible threat such services would have on privacy.
On Sunday night, Amazon.com founder Jeff Bezos showed off how unmanned aerial vehicles, otherwise known as "drones," could be used to deliver packages to people's homes in 30 minutes or less during an interview on the CBS news program "60 Minutes." (Disclosure: "60 Minutes" is produced by CBS, which also is the parent company of CNET.)

Boys like things that fly.
But I couldn't help thinking that Jeff Bezos's startling revelation of Amazon's octocopters on "60 Minutes" this weekend was made to help products fly from Amazon's virtual shelves on Cyber Monday.
Those with technical minds and a grasp of Federal Aviation Administration regulations will intone portentously on the legal feasibility of such an enterprise.
I'm more interested in the sort of world we might be living in if Amazon's little buzzards will be flying around delivering toasters and Arcade Fire CDs to those in urgent need.

Smaug, the dastardly dragon from "The Hobbit" movies, is catching some serious air time as decor on an Air New Zealand plane. The decorated Boeing B777-300 is a flying publicity stunt to promote the opening of "The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug."
The plane won't actually breathe fire or eat fantastical creatures, but it is an impressive sight. The 242-foot-long aircraft might give us a hint as to how big director Peter Jackson's version of the dragon is supposed to be. Compare that with the known 40-foot length of a Tyrannosaurus rex dinosaur and I think we all know who the true "tyrant lizard" is.… Read more
Amazon is testing a delivery service that uses drones to deliver packages within 30 minutes of an order being placed.
Dubbed Amazon Prime Air, the service uses 8-propeller drones about the size of a remote-controlled airplane to transport shoebox-size plastic bins from fulfillment centers to customers' homes. The service, which still requires more testing and clearance from the Federal Aviation Administration, could take to the skies as soon as four to five years, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos told Charlie Rose during an interview Sunday on "60 Minutes." (Disclosure: "60 Minutes" is produced by CBS, which also is the parent company to CNET.) … Read more
In the tech world, the holiday spirit involves the right cross, the jarring upper-cut, and what they call in England the Glasgow Kiss.
If you're not out there explaining to people why your product is better than an Apple offering, then you simply don't realize what's at stake in stuffing the Christmas stocking.
After Microsoft has offered its consistent pummeling of the iPad, into the ring steps Amazon. And how.
To present its Kindle tablet, Washington state's other tech company decides it's going to compare its graces with the iPad Air.

The iPad Mini Retina's speed seals the deal.
A lot has been written about the Mini Retina's display. For good reason, of course. Take a display with 786,432 pixels (iPad Mini original) and put it up against one with over 3 million (iPad Retina) and you notice the difference.
But I have been more impressed with the performance of the Mini Retina. After using it for two weeks, the speed is what has sold me.
Air Drive is a file management tool for your iPhone that allows you to connect through a desktop browser and move files or photos back and forth. Because of the limitations of iTunes for file management on an iOS device, this free app is a great tool that, while not as powerful as some other file managers, worked well in all of our tests.
Installation of Air Drive takes only a couple of minutes. Open the app and turn on the server with the switch of an option listed on the homepage and you can connect with the IP address … Read more
Searching for an iPhone 5S? Your chances of snagging one have gotten better.
In his latest biweekly survey of 60 US Apple stores, Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster found that availability of the 5S has risen to 90 percent of all iPhone models in stock. That's a huge improvement over 31 percent only two weeks ago -- and 10 percent at the start of October.
At this point last year, the iPhone 5 accounted for 95 percent of all iPhones in stock. However, iPhone 5S availability at AT&T and Verizon are better than that seen for the … Read more
At Intel's investor day meeting Thursday, an executive cited Apple as the primary force behind the chipmaker's push for big improvements in battery life.
"We're extremely excited about the MacBook Air," said Kirk Skaugen, senior vice president of Intel's PC Client Group.
"Essentially, cooperating with Apple doubled the battery life from generation to generation -- from 6 to 12.5 hours on the MacBook Air," he said.
CNET Reviews said that the battery life on the 2013 MacBook Air with Intel's Haswell processor is "astonishing."
"The previous-generation 13-inch … Read more
