They say we should keep our friends close and our frenemies closer, but sometimes, despite our best efforts, we lose a Facebook friend. It can be handy (or infuriating) to know for sure who's left the fold, and until now, there was no good way to … Read more
I'm a sucker for automation. I'm the perfect storm of impatience, laziness, and sausage fingers, so anything that can save me a step or two qualifies as a must. In fact, there are plenty of things I'd never do if they weren't taken care of in the background (like posting links to my blog entries on FB). IfThisThenThat, which recently opened its doors to the world, wants to streamline our online lives and make it easier to integrate multiple services. In a way, it's like very simple programming using the easy-to-remember format "if this … Read more
A lot of changes are rolling out on Facebook, and the Apps area didn't escape this remodel. Currently, an app only needs you to authorize permission once. After permission is given, it can post and share activity on Facebook on your behalf without approval. If you want to check up on what an app has access to, or are tired of sharing what game you're playing, here's how to adjust those settings:
Step 1: In Facebook, click the small arrow near your name in the upper-right-hand corner and choose Privacy Settings.
Step 2: Scroll down to Apps … Read more
If you are impatient and want to experience the new Timeline on Facebook announced earlier today, you can turn it through the developer section of Facebook. The process is simple, takes a few minutes, and will require some patience as Facebook tidies up any lingering issues and bugs. You game? Read on.
Editor's note: This post was updated on September 23, 2011, to add more information about Timeline and how it can be customized.
1. Real-time updates with Ticker
Dubbed "the Facebook within a Facebook," Ticker shows you what your friends are doing in real time in a box to the right of the News Feed. You'll see minor updates like new friendships, likes, comments, and other lightweight activities, while more important activities are reserved for the News Feed.
With Facebook's new apps (see below), you'll also see app activity, exposing what songs your friends are … Read more
Facebook has announced a ton of new features today during its F8 conference. The first feature rolled out is called Timeline. While it's not currently available to most Facebook users, you can sign up, making your account eligible to receive the new feature earlier than most.… Read more
Do you count yourself among the multitudes who dislike Facebook's latest revision, mainly because it took away the ability to toggle between Top Stories and Most Recent in your news feed? Regarding the new news feed, Facebook explains, "If you haven't visited Facebook for a while, the first things you'll see are top photos and statuses posted while you've been away...If you check Facebook more frequently, you'll see the most recent stories first."
If you don't trust Facebook to sort your news for you, you can manually create a Most Recent news feed. Ironically, you must turn to one of Facebook's new features--Lists--to resurrect the old Most Recent feed. Just create a custom list and add all of your friends and pages to it; the resulting list appears to be sorted by chronological order. Disclaimer: If you have hundreds upon hundreds of Facebook friends, the process will be laborious because there isn't a way to select all, at least that I have found. Instead, you must click one by one to add each friend or page to the list.… Read more
Klout is a service that uses social networks to measure your influence over others. Scores are tabulated for each user on a scale of 1-100. The higher your score, the more influence you have, according to Klout.
Twitter.com doesn't display Klout scores, but if you use Firefox or the Chrome browser, it's easy to remedy with add-ons. If you use Firefox, install the Firefox Klout add-on. If you use Chrome, install the Chrome Klout extension.
The next time you visit Twitter.com, you'll find Klout scores to the left of the Twitter handles.

NumberGuru is a free service that allows you to quickly look up who is calling you, in some cases even if they are calling you from a cell phone. The best part of the service, besides its speed, is the ability to reverse look up as many numbers as you want for free.
If you have checked Facebook today, you have probably noticed a sidebar ticker has been added to the right-hand column of the newly redesigned News Feed, along with complaints and snarky comments about the new News Feed and this ticker. About the ticker, Facebook says:Ticker, on the right-hand side of your account, lets you see all your friends' activity in real-time. When you hover over an item on ticker, you can see the full story and join the conversation as it happens. Ticker updates itself as stories happen. This gives you a more complete picture of what your friends … Read more
