Last week Google released another build of Chrome Beta for Android. The normal bug fixes and refined features, as well as new issues were introduced in the public beta of Chrome. Perhaps one of the more interesting changes in the Chrome Beta is the introduction of a tried and true method for adding a shortcut to a Web site or Web app to your Android device's home screen.
With the redesign of iOS 7, the color mode to differentiate when a switch is set to on or off has changed. The color of a switch that's off is white, and the color for a switch that's on is green.
Previous versions of iOS also had an On or Off indicator in view when a switch was moved to one side or another. Alas, those labels are gone in iOS 7, but you can add a different type of label should you prefer it. For some, be it due to disabilities or other personal preference, the color-only … Read more
The method to carry out either task has changed a bit from previous versions of iOS, but it's still just as easy.
When in a conversation in the Messages app and you want to delete or forward a message that was sent to you, you simply tap and hold on the message bubble until the options "Copy" and "More..." come up.
Tapping on "More...&… Read more
The first time I handed an iPad to my kid, I felt a little guilty, but not for the reasons you might think. The way I figured, with such an awesome tool in his tiny hands -- with the collected knowledge of mankind literally at his fingertips -- my child had an unfair advantage over his peers and a fast track to an Ivy League education.
But minutes later, when I had to pry Angry Birds from him like a T-bone from a tiger, I quickly realized that the iPad, for all its potential, was a tool that needed some … Read more
When Apple unveiled the iPhone 5S, one of the main feature sets shown off during the presentation was the camera improvements. Two of the new features stood out more than others, were slo-mo videos and a new Burst Mode.
Burst Mode will take photos at up to 10 frames per second on the 5S, so you don't miss the best shot. This comes in especially useful when taking a photo of a child, or an action shot and timing isn't easy.
To use Burst Mode on the iPhone 5S, you launch the Camera app and ensure that you'… Read more
iOS 7 adds a new interactive layer throughout the operating system. It can best be seen when looking at a wallpaper on your home or lock screens.
When you change the viewing angle of your device by tilting it in any direction, any graphics present on the screen will appear to move. This adds a realistic layer of depth to iOS 7. So realistic, in fact, it reportedly has been making some users sick. Should you be in the motion sick camp, or simply hate the new feature, you can always reduce the motion effects throughout iOS 7.

Evernote updated its iOS app for iOS 7 and introduced a new feature by way of its partnership with 3M, maker of Post-it Notes among many, many other wide-ranging products. The Evernote iOS app features a new camera mode that lets you take a picture of a Post-it Note (or a square section of any note you may have jotted down on any variety of paper), which it will then digitize, making your handwritten notes searchable. And you can assign actions to notes jotted down on four popular and brightly colored Post-it Notes.
To snap a shot of a note … Read more
iOS 7 caught me close to -- but not at -- the end of two product cycles. My current Verizon contract isn't up until January, so my iPhone 4S will have to suffice until after the holidays. And I hope to replace my iPad 2 with whatever new iPad Apple is expected to roll out next month. Until then, I'm stuck with my current devices, which are acting a bit sluggish after upgrading to iOS 7.
Thankfully, there are a few things you can do to improve an old iOS device's performance somewhat. Before we begin, a … Read more
Hiding preloaded apps on an iOS device has always consisted of creating a "junk" folder, placing all unused apps in it, and hiding it on the last home screen. Up until iOS 7, placing apps such as Newsstand in a folder wasn't even possible.
For the time being, there's a bug in iOS 7 that allows you to place a folder inside another folder, as originally pointed out by TUAW.
The trick to creating nested folders is all in the timing. That may sound familiar, as it's a similar workaround to a previous bug that … Read more
Every so often, another device is touted as supporting "Miracast." Fighting its way into the mainstream, Miracast is a killer feature poised to wipe out other video streaming standards in a very fragmented Android market.
Acting like a wireless HDMI cable, Miracast mirrors your Android device onto your TV screen in high definition and with audio. Once Miracast is enabled, everything -- from the general interface, to apps and videos -- is duplicated on the big screen without the burden of a cable connecting the two devices.
Its differentiating quality? It doesn't rely on your home's … Read more
