DVD drive items not on directory

I am trying to copy old family videos on DVD to an external hard drive. When I put one of the DVD's in my computer ( a new Dell running Windows 8) I can play the DVD but if I look at the directory for the DVD drive it doesn't show any files. When I go to "burn" the DVD and select my source, the drive appears empty. Any suggestions?

Let's say it's one of those oddball Video DVDs.

Try this. Go get ImgBurn and use the feature that creates the .ISO file from a DVD.

Now go get VLC Player and play that .ISO.

Remember, I only have what clues you provide. It could be one of those odd Video DVDs but not much is told about how it was created.
