Changing .tmp extension to .zip

I am trying to extract a .tmp file. But I don't know how to rename it as a .zip so that I can do so. Help!!

My apps write .tmp files

And they are not in .zip format. Just plain old text in most apps and in some apps these are binary encoded numbers.

Not very useful to anyone but me and my apps.

The way to rename a file is dependent on the OS (Windows, Mac, Linux) and on if you're using a GUI or a command prompt and (if a GUI) on exactly what program you're using (say Windows Explorer, or any Explorer replacement) and its settings.
So we can't tell either.

But, as Bob said, it's unlike that renaming would help.
