get to apps on tablet

I have this new tablet. Everything has been fine up until tonight when my daughter openned it for a christmas present. I cut it on and the screen says, "android". How do I get this back to the main screen of the apps and all?

I'm seeing truckloads of no-name android tablets with versions 1.x to 4.x so I fear a person new to Android won't be able to google the answer.

And I stop short of supplying the answer for the thousand tablet variants I've encounters. Some have home buttons, some don't.

It's like asking us for a light bulb and expecting to get the right one. Too many today?

I'm bumping into the Color Nook with folk that installed Android and that's all over the map again. You could tell me it's a Color Nook 7 inch but without telling me the version of Android we are still without a good answer.
