We have a wireless network and both pc's are connected to it. We are both running Windows XP and I have tried to set up sharing but my wife still can't use it, the machines are only separated by a wall and about 4 feet.

XP had severe deficiencies in networking (no WPA/WPA2 USB2 support).
There is also an issue where the firewall in the router can block this. Since both are connecting to the router, I don't expect this to be a distance issue.

Prove it's not the wall by moving the PC into direct sight of the server. Sometimes that's all it takes and then you figure how the wall is stopping the signal. Next, all rules for networking apply, so recheck it all and take nothing for granted. Of course, be sure whatever networking assets do work and are a good fit. Under the problem XP PC, does it "see" the network at all? Small details do matter, so discount anything. The topic I'm sure is well discussed, maybe a quick google search. Here's one:
