I have a Sony Vaio with XP. I am sending it to be recycled. How do I wipe clean the computer?

Your best option is using a "drive wiper" pgm. which will erase all data from the old drive. Popular wipers are DBAN or KILLDISK. Google for either and get the free version, properly burn to a blank disc and use. If properly burned, it will be a "bootable CD disc" which boots and then click from the menu what you want to delete all data, etc.. read manual or instructions.

If the whole purpose is to recycle, then you can remove the hard drive itself. It isn't going to be a real brain teaser, just common sense. Remove the hard drive and send the rest to be recycled. You now have the opportunity to break down the hard drive and see what makes it work. I often tear these apart to recycle myself. They part into aluminium, steel and electronics. Electronics get tossed with steel because its very little to begin with. If you like make a clock out of the disc platters or art work. As Robert offered, you can smash the living dickens out of the hard drive and toss it in(plastic bag) the PC case as well. -OR- keep it as a hi-tech door stop(as is).
