PC to receiver audio quality

I ran RCA cables from my onboard audio (an Asus M4A785-M motherboard) to a Technics SA-EX140 receiver. The sound is very faint, though, and contains a lot of noise (i.e. buzzing). What would be the most likely solution for better audio in this case, upgrade to a better pc audio card, or upgrade to a better home audio receiver / amplifier?

Hello, I used a fiber optic cable _ Dell xps 420 to Pioneer vxi74 . The sound is outstanding . good luck

Unfortunately my receiver is older, and does not include a TSOLink port. I think the best way to approach my situation will be to upgrade my pc audio card first, and then maybe a newer receiver.

Unfortunately my receiver is older, and does not contain a TOSLink input. Though, also, I wonder if this is what my receiver is also lacking, due to it's age (taken from a description of a Panasonic SA-XR55S receiver):

"Sound quality improves with the elimination of digital-to-analog
conversion when connecting a digital source device (such as a DVD
player) to an analog amplifier. With the SA-XR55K, all the processing
and amplification is done in the digital domain, resulting in low
distortion and extremely low background noise."
